Step By Step Instructions For Inserting The HTML Code

Step1  Make a copy of your web page before you start.

Step 2  When you sign up, you will be shown the HTML code to insert into your page (you can also get the code by clicking on the 'View HTML' link on the Needlework Banner Exchange main page). Use your mouse to highlight and copy the text starting with

and ending with
<!-- END NEEDLEWORK BANNER EXCHANGE CODE -->

Step 3  Using your web page editing program (FrontPage, for example), open the web page that you want to have the banner displayed on.

Step 4  Go to where you want to have the banner displayed and enter a 'return', the words 'place code here', and then press 'return' twice.

You should have 3 lines new lines: a blank line, a line that says 'place code here', and a blank line. It will looks like this...

Banner Placement  You can place the banner ads anywhere you like on your site. I would suggest placing at the bottom of your main page. You can place the banner on any page in your site, but the home page is suggested simply because it has the most traffic. Remember that the more times a banner ad is displayed on your site, the more times your banner ad will be displayed on other sites.

Naturally, there can not be any attempt made to hide the banner ads. You can display a limited number of other banners, ads, etc. on the same page; but please be fair to the other members of the exchange.  Placement on a 'Links Page' will not be accepted because it is not fair to other members.

Step 5  Go to the Code View. Your program will have a way to edit the raw html code. The code view will be text only; there not be any pictures showing. You can also save the page at this stage and open the page in text editor program like Windows Notepad.

Step 6  Find the 'code here' that you inserted in step 4.

Your code might look a little bit like the sample below.

Now find the paragraph return (<p>&nbsp;), the paragraph 'place code here' (<p>place code here), and the extra paragraph return that you added in step 4...

will start appearing on other members web sites.

[you can also remove the extra line (<p>&nbsp;) above and below the banner code, but I would suggest leaving them in until you see what it looks like on your web site. You can always remove them later.]

Step 7  Change all four instances XX to a number. There are 4 places to change; change all four to the SAME number. Any 2 digit number works (12, 44, 75, etc). If you place the banner on more than one page, the number must be different on each page (11 on page 1, and 12 on page 2, 13 on page 3, for example)

Step 8  Save and load the new page to your web site. When you go to your page on the web you should see a banner appear. If a banner does not show up.

You might find it helpful to look at the source code for a page that has a banner ad to see what the final result should look like. You can go to our home page and view the source code. In the Windows Internet Explorer browser go to View->Source to see the source code.  Go to Edit->Find and search for "Begin Needlework Banner" to go directly to the inserted code.
