Dollar for dollar, it is hard to beat free food or beverages as an in-store promotion.

Try doing it with a little flare. If you have coffee, try a special blend. Maybe an espresso machine! Or try something different like herb tea or hot cider.

Here is an easy recipe for hot spiced cider: Use a coffee percolator to heat the cider. In the coffee tray add red hot candies and some whole cloves. Use small cups. Customers appreciate the treat, but a small cup is fine.

How to use this idea in your business...

You want customers to linger in your store. The longer they stay, the more they buy. Especially in the cold months, a hot beverage is a great promotion.

Food can be a problem. Most treats are greasy and can be a mess on the floor, not to mention the fingerprints! Be sure to have plenty of napkins available.

Cost is always an issue with any promotion. Cost per serving is important, but don't look cheap. If you need to cut the cost, serve smaller servings of a quality item.
